How to organise notes with folders
Past twenty notes, "where did I put that?" begins. Four tools — folders, colours, order and search — keep even hundreds of notes findable.
1. Create folders and move notes in
- Click New folder, then drag notes onto the folder name. Drag a multi-selection to move several at once.
- Select notes, right-click → Create folder (with selected notes) to make the folder and move the notes in one step.
- Right-click → Move to folder… picks from existing folders; Move out of folder sends notes back to All notes.
The number on each folder chip is its note count. All notes shows only the notes that are not in a folder.
2. Folder colours and order
Right-click a folder name: under Open, Rename and Delete there is a colour palette. Pick one of the ten sticky-note colours to tint the chip, or the striped chip on the left to clear it. Decide a rule — yellow for in progress, lavender for on hold — and stick to it.
Drag a folder name before or after another to change the order; keep the folders you open most at the front. Order and colour are saved in the JSON file and the browser backup.
3. Recolour notes
New notes get a random colour, but right-click any note and a 10-colour palette sits at the top of the menu. With several notes selected, one click recolours them all. Ctrl+Z undoes it.
Let folders mean "topic" and colours mean "status": inside a "Tackle" folder, yellow = to buy, mint = bought.
4. Set the order
- Rows / Column / One page rearrange the current folder neatly.
- Sort by created lines notes up by the time they were first made. Hover the small date in a note's corner for its creation and last-edit times.
- Turn the magnet off for free placement, mind-map style.
5. Search
Ctrl+F or the Find note button searches every folder: note text, product titles, link addresses and the one-line notes on product cards. Picking a result opens its folder and highlights the note; Move to front sends it to the first slot.
6. Export what you organised
With a folder open, Export turns its notes into text or Markdown in the order shown — ready for meeting notes, a shared shopping list or a blog draft. Keep the whole board with Save notes (JSON) and reopen it with Open notes.
Limits
- Up to 100 folders and 400 notes per board; folders cannot be nested.
- Deleting a folder does not delete its notes — they return to All notes.
- The automatic browser backup restores only on the same device and browser. Move a JSON file to use another device.
